Various definitions of the word ‘witchcraft’ start from the same idea and reach different conclusions. Witchcraft is commonly defined as the practice of magic and it consists mainly in the use of supernatural forces. The problem is what kind or forces – good or evil? This fundamental opposition – good versus evil, yin and yang, alpha and omega – can be found in many cultures and civilizations.
In the Middle Ages people, mostly illiterate and ignorant, accepted the doctrine according to which all witchcraft or supposed witchcraft practices were inspired exclusively by the devil. And thus under the influence of the religious leaders thousands of people got killed for the “guilt” of practicing magic for evil purposes.
There are some features that can be found in all cultures, European and Asian, when it comes to the use of sorcery. A wizard or a witch can influence another person’s body and private property, he or she casts magic spells or conjures the dead and the devil. The powers commonly attributed to those believed to use magic originated in the pre-Christian beliefs of the peoples around the world. There was a time when the pagans in Europe strongly believed in gods, spirits and demons which could be called for help by the white witches and wizards or on the contrary to harm by the black witches. The Church placed a Christian methodology involving saints and divine relics which when venerated or mentioned in special ceremonies, such as the liturgy, would bring luck, health and peace. The fundamental difference between the pagan beliefs and the Christian doctrine consists in this clear statement: God is the only one who can be called for help and He does only good things. Satan is not worth paying attention to because he is an evil-doer.
As I said, in the Middle Ages people were particularly interested in witchcraft. Anybody knows about the witch hunts. A witch-hunt is a search for the so called witches and wizards or evidence of sorcery, often involving moral panic, mass hysteria and mob lynching, but in many historical situations also legally sanctioned and involving official witchcraft trials. From this point of view the “classical age” of witch-hunts in
In
Today, after of period when witchcraft has been neglected, it comes back but this time only as a source of inspiration for the showbiz. Especially in books and films aimed at the youth, witches are often depicted as wicked old women with wrinkled skin and pointy hats, clothed in black, with warts on their noses and sometimes long claw-like fingernails. They are usually portrayed as concocting magic potions in large cauldrons. Witches typically ride through the air on a broomstick as in Harry Potter’s universe. The modern folklore is represented mainly by successful literary works and movies such as the classical The Wizard of Oz, released in 1939, one of the greatest film ever.
While in Europe the word “witchcraft” stands for an obsolete concept in
Real or not witchcraft and all the myths related to it represents an important part of the cultural heritage of the world. In my opinion this concept is actually trying to explain the inexplicable. Originated in the ancient times the whole collection of practices and legends are just an attempt to make the world accessible to as many people as possible.

I am a 6th Generation witch (at least), a Pagan Hedge Witch and I feel that I must insist that it is not evil. It’s simply being at one with nature, and trying to be the best we can.

wow…did someone actually talk about god on this page? and all those spelling mistakes, tisk tisk… good thing god didn’t rely on you to write the bible “Ulises”. A 5 year old could have done better. And Rhiannon is correct when it comes to “witches”, all of you should study the history of Witch-craft before making any comments.

Ok first I must say that the ‘greatest power’ is jesus christ…..um no! If you invoke the name of JC in the face of a demon that is not under Christian law or rule then it is just going to laugh at you and quite possibably kill you. Second, Witchcraft is not a game nor is it a tool. Thrid it is not something that is cool, fun, or ‘fad’ based. It is a living breathing orginism. You live witchcraft, breath it, and grow within it. You can not one day decied to just ‘become’ a witch and 5 months later decide that its too much work and that you dont want to study it any more. It is something that you must always study and learn from. Just because you think that its cool, or because you have see the hollywood version of it in movies or tv shows like buffy the vampire slayer, charmed or practical magic, or the craft it isnt something that can be played around with. You can’t just whip up a spell and hope to fix your entire life with just a flick of a wand, because trust me if magick worked like it does in the movies this world would be a different place. It takes years and years worth of study to even begin to know how to properly cast a spell, and all the different rituals that you must use in order to protect yourself and make sure that your spell/ritual doesnt accidently conjure up something that you are not able to handle. Also using magic to make someone love you or to ‘teach’ so and so a lesson is just wrong and you are leaving yourself open for all kinds of wonderful evil things to come into your life and just for a lack of a better word “fuck with you” I am the first male witch in my family, and through my male ego i thought that I was king shit and used magic and witchcraft for evil and what have you. I practiced the evilest black magic and really fucked alot of people over and up with it. In return for all my evil and wrong doing I suffered in my own life very very badly. My wife left me, my step father passed away, my house burnt down, and my car was stolen, and I was homeless living on the streets for 2 1/2 months. You young people all want it for the wrong reason, and that is why you will never know, understand, or be able to fully work magic. There are laws and rules that govern the magical world and without proper knowledge or guidence you just wont make things happen. I would really rethink what you are looking for and understand that I am only taking time out of my life to tell you this as a warning, not to fan the fire of wanting to learn, not to be ‘preachy’ or anything like that, just trying to despence some old knowledge into new minds.

kk, I think #2 (ulises) is a dumb a$$. this is a place for WITCHES! the one you christ cannot grant you that type of power (i shuold know, id did my research on religons, unlike you obviously). you make me sick. go take your preaching to the chapel where it belongs. the old ways were here first. and just because being a witch is what society calls ‘normal’, does not mean we will let them drive us out. all religions have an equal standing ground and basis, but don’t walk into an apple fruit stand and convince everyone there to sell oranges, you ignoramus.
ps. Lord Overon, well said. ^_^

Lord Overon of the DAPC — I don’t know if you even bother to read this anymore. I’m doing a final project in Witchcraft — and stumbled upon this site.
How is it that Lord Overon managed to impart some of the most valuable information a new wiccan/pagan/shaman would ever need and was totally disregarded??? I’m flabberghasted. I’ve been looking for such valuable advice from a person who’s had trial and error ordeals with magick — and i found it when i wasn’t looking for it. But how could Lord Overon’s advice be disregarded??? My mind can’t comprehend.
Perhaps people just don’t care anymore.
That would be sad.

Lord Overton is right. I am a new Wiccan but have done my research. The quest for knowledge is never ending. The power that is given to us is to use to make us better people and to make the world a better place to live in. Once you understand this, your mind will open and you can experience the true joys of practicing magick.
Just remember to read, read, and read. And be careful where you get your information. If you are a beginner like me, I would like to suggest a book that helped me so much. It is called Wicca:A Guide For The Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham. It gives the basic theories of Wicca, deities, rituals, and so much more. It even includes the author’s Book of Shadows. It is a great place to start!
My adoptive mother is a Christian and didn’t understand Wicca and was scared of it because she thought it was “evil.” I gave her the book to read and she understands now. She still believes what she believes and that is fine, each person has the right to choose. But now she has the information she was looking for to put her mind at ease.
Wicca is different to each person who practices it, but all have a common goal, and that is the beauty in it.
Good luck with your endeavors and blessed be!
